Stewardship

At Saint Matthew's, we believe it is a great privilege to be wise managers of the abundance God has given us. Here are some of the ways we do so:

  • Give a portion of our time to God through regular acts of service - some public, and some very private
  • Promote the Stewardship of Creation
  • Teach, and embrace in our own lives, wise money management so that we can indeed know the freedom the Christ died for us to know
  • Give generously of our financial resources even as Christ has generously given to us.

Stewardship of Creation

“Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty.” BCP 329 Holy Eucharist Rite I

Each week as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist we include various prayers for wise use and enjoyment of God’s creation. The Stewardship of Creation Committee is eager to help our congregation put those prayers into action. Ongoing projects include weekly recycling of extra Sunday Bulletins, providing space for quiet reflection in Saint Matthew’s Sanctuary in the Woods, participation in Earth Day Sunday activities each April, and adopting the Cedar Grove Trail in Claude Moore Park.

Future projects include expanded recycling opportunities, participation in a Shrine Mont work day, Keep Loudoun Beautiful and/or Sterling Boulevard Clean-ups, and walks in the woods (either locally or in Shenandoah National Park) to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

The Committee also provides links to outside resources that can help us make wise consumer choices and explore the connection between caring for the environment and our faith. Simple every-day actions like recycling, using energy-efficient appliances, and planting native plants can all help us care for God’s creation.
